Meet Our Doctors
Dr. Carrie Bonds
Dr. Carrie Bonds, originally from Homewood, Alabama, is the oldest of three children. She earned her Doctorate of Optometry from the UAB School of Optometry in 2009 and has called Tuscaloosa home for the past 15 years. She lives here with her husband, their two daughters, and two beloved schnauzers.
In 2014, Dr. Carrie founded The Family Eye Group and has been proudly serving patients in Tuscaloosa and the surrounding communities ever since. Most recently, she opened her beautiful new office on Jack Warner Parkway NE, designed to provide a comfortable and welcoming space for patients.
With extensive experience in eye health, Dr. Carrie diagnoses and manages conditions such as glaucoma and macular degeneration. She enjoys caring for patients of all ages—from babies to seniors—and has a special passion for fitting contact lenses, including specialty designs for complex prescriptions. Her greatest joy is helping patients achieve their best possible vision and protecting their eye health for years to come.
Dr. Laura Bonds
Dr. Laura Bonds was born and raised in Homewood, Alabama, as the middle child of a close-knit family. She still calls Homewood home, where she lives with her husband and their two pups. She earned her English degree from Birmingham-Southern College in 2006. She then went on to receive her Doctorate of Optometry from the UAB School of Optometry in 2014.
Following graduation, Dr. Laura joined her sister, Dr. Carrie Bonds, at The Family Eye Group, where she has been providing exceptional care to patients in Tuscaloosa and the surrounding communities for the over 10 years.
Dr. Laura enjoys caring for patients of all ages, with expertise in complex contact lens fittings, glaucoma evaluations, diabetic eye exams, and more. She also has a passion for helping patients find their perfect glasses prescription so they can achieve their clearest vision. Over the past decade, she has loved building relationships with her patients and being part of their ongoing eye health journey.
Dr. Melanie Chaney
Dr. Melanie Chaney’s optometry journey began in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, where her first eye exam sparked a passion for eye care. She began working at an optometry office, learning the essentials of eyewear fitting and patient care. She later earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Akron and her Doctor of Optometry degree from The Ohio State University.
Dr. Chaney practiced in Ohio for nearly 20 years, serving patients while also volunteering globally with OneSight to bring eye care to underserved communities.
In 2020, she relocated to Alabama and joined The Family Eye Group, where she provides exceptional care to patients of all ages. Her decades of experience include everything from comprehensive vision exams to medical eye care, always with a focus on helping patients see their best.
Outside the office, Dr. Chaney enjoys photography with her husband, wood carving, and practicing Tai Chi. She values staying active and connected, both in her community and with her family.
